Ajay Devgan is all set to release his directorial debut film U, Me Aur Hum. He is confident and content when we met him at his office. He is undoubtedly one of the best actors of Bollywood. Though it’s his first film as a director, there’s no nervousness rather he is more confident and excited. Ajay Devgan spoke to Indiatimes Movies about his directorial debut U, Me Aur Hum and his sweetheart Kajol.
U, Me Aur Hum is ready and set to release this week. This is you first film a director. Are you nervous?
I am not very nervous. I am happy that film is over and releasing soon. I have got a very good response of advance booking so I am happy today. I am confident that people will not say that it’s a bad movie. But how people will like it, depends on every individual.
How did you select the story? You had mentioned that there was a kind of positivity in the script.
Yes and it was something that touched my heart.
What exactly in the story touched to your heart?
The whole positivity of the story touched my heart. And the bottom line of any film is to entertain people. In that process of story telling if you have managed to give your message, I feel half the job is done. Here I am talking about love and life, so if a couple come to watch this film and at the end of the movie they feel close to each other or if someone watches alone and at the end, he starts missing his partner then I am successful as a director.
Acting and directing is rather a difficult job. How did you manage it?
It’s not very difficult if you are clear in your thoughts. I was completely clear about things that I wanted in my film. Yes there’s lot of effort and concentration required when you are directing a film but it’s not difficult.
After being an actor for many years, what made you to don the director’s hat?
It wasn’t planned but it was a thought which inspired me to make this movie. Therefore I didn’t think that is right or wrong time to direct a movie. I just followed my heart.
Now after completing a movie, how do you see yourself as a filmmaker?
I think filmmaking is about story telling. It’s on a director how honestly he expresses his thoughts through his film. My effort was to create everything that was written on the paper because I don’t think there’s any director who can manage to show exactly according to his script. But I think if you come little close to that then you are quite successful in expressing your idea or thoughts to your audience
You have done six films with Kajol how do you think she has evolved as an actress?
She is undoubtedly a great actress. She has certainly grown as an actress. She understands cinema much better. In this film she has the most difficult character in the film. In fact I feel this is the most difficult character she has ever played in her career. She has done it so beautifully.
Was she your first choice?
Well she didn’t give me any other choice because when I narrated this idea she said. “I want to do it.” Before the start of this film she was already there in the film. And obviously Kajol wound be any director’s first choice.
How will you define her character off screen?
She handles production and finances. She takes care of overall looking of things.
There’s lot of buzz about your salsa dance. Tell us about it.
There’s not much dancing in the film. I am the director and I managed to fool everyone that I have done lot of practice but I did all the easy movements.
You used to assist directors before becoming an actor so that time there was no plans to become a director?
No nothing as such because my father wanted me to be an actor. I said I don’t mind being an actor, but I was more inclined to the other side of the camera. Filmmaking was like passion for me so that came to me very easily.
How do you see your growth from an actor to a director?
I think that point of time I was more confident because I was doing things which others can’t. I used to my take the kind of shot which used to shock others because they couldn’t do it. But now my concentration is different. My focus is on story telling. See that’s growth. That time I used to think I should give the best scene but now I think how I take that best scene to express my story.
You have worked with the finest directors of the industry. Did you get any inputs form them?
I think everyone is different from the other. They all have their different forte. Rajkumar Santoshi is a very good actor and director. Bhatt saab is not a great actor but he can tell you exactly what he wants. I feel after working with directors like this I have definitely learned few things from them.
