'Kajol didn't get a chance to give creative inputs'
9 April 2008
What made you take to direction when you were at the peak of your acting career?
It's true that I was busy with my acting career but I always wanted to do something different. When I got this idea (about the film) I started working on it and narrated it to Robinda (Robin Bhatt). We all shaped it up and decided to make this film and that's when I decided that I will direct it too. It was not an impulsive decision.
Your decision to turn director many people…
I had this idea about three years ago, and when I actually started working on it, I started getting calls from a lot of people but I kept denying it. I announced it only after I was completely ready.
Who thought of the title, U Me Aur Hum?
This was Kajol's idea. The film was earlier titled Tum, Main Aur Hum but then Robinda changed it to U Me Aur Hum. The film has everything in it, music, emotions and comedy. I am confident that it will do well.
Was Kajol the obvious choice?
When I narrated the script to Kajol, she got very excited and immediately told me that she wanted to do it. I was more than happy as there is no one better than Kajol. I sincerely believe that it's her best role so far and it is her best performance till date. Even though she is the producer of the film, she didn't have a chance to give creative inputs (Laughs).
You have an image of an action image but there is no action in U Me Aur Hum…
I have followed the script. There was no action in Golmaal but it worked. There was no action in Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam. I believe that if you make a good film, it will surely work at the box-office.
Now that your film is on the verge of releasing are you feeling the pressure?
Where is the time to be nervous? My work just got over yesterday. I may start feeling the pressure from tomorrow.
Have you signed London Dreams?
Yes I have, as both the characters, including Salman's, are very good. I had issues with the earlier producer but after Vipul took over, he asked me if I would do it, and I immediately agreed.
The buzz is that you and Rajkumar Santoshi are no longer friends...
Not true. We have no problems. He still has my dates, but if I've not met him it's because I have been busy with my film. But I don't know what he wants to make next, Ramayan or Asoka.
Are you playing the modern day Karna in Prakash Jha's Rajniti…
Yes, I am playing the modern day Karna in Rajniti. Prakash Jha has a fantastic script and it is an exciting character. He has woven the basic premise of Mahabharata in modern day politics very deftly.
