The usually reticent Ajay Devgan pays tribute to the special women in his life
After many excuses, umpteen discussions and several angry arguments later, Ajay Devgan agrees to talk about the most important women in his life — but with “certain conditions”. He will only speak about what he’s “comfortable” with. On the occasion of Women’s Day, Ajay took time off from the dubbing of U, Me Aur Hum to talk about his mom Veena, his two sisters Neelam and Kavita, his wife Kajol and daughter Nysa. Read on…
Mother: Veena
I have been very close to my mother from the beginning, I was petrified of my father (action director Veeru Devgan). My mother always supported me in whatever I did — from my turning an actor to getting married and now becoming a director. I could always tell her whatever was on my mind, I could never open up to my dad like that. Whenever I got into mischief or trouble as a child, and in my youth, mom saved me from dad’s ire. When I fell in love, she knew about it too. She was happy just because I was happy. She guides mewhen she feels I am wrong. My mom’s been my friend, philosopher and guide. Even today, I can talk to her about anything and everything.
Sisters: Neelam and Kavita
My two sisters, Neelam and Kavita, are both younger to me and I have always been very possessive and protective about them and I love them to death. They are both married and happy in life and I think I have achieved something in life, when I see them with their families. Even today, they pamper me a lot. They are always a part of our family on all occasions, and are my biggest critics. They watch all my films and always give me constructive feedback and the dos and don’ts that I try to follow.
Wife: Kajol
I think I am very lucky that I am married to Kajol, as we share the same values. My family is very important to me and Kajol gelled with them even before we got married. Even today whenever I have an argument in the house, they are all on one side and I’m stuck on the other side. My family and Kajol have adapted so well with each other that sometimes I feel like an outsider. Kajol has been the most positive person around me. I feel that in a marriage — or any relationship for that matter — problems are inevitable, and giving up should not be an option. Giving up at the first sign of trouble is easy. Relationships, especially marriages, deserve better. Any relationship needs to be worked upon and a huge effort is needed to keep a relationship going strong. And if love is the basis of the relationship, making this effort comes naturally, and is enjoyable. With Kajol, I have never felt the effort — love, marriage, parenthood — everything has happened so beautifully and naturally with us… I really don’t know where the last nine years of marriage have gone. It has been great working with her in U Me Aur Hum... she’s a director’s delight!
Daughter: Nysa
My most precious bundle of joy! Nysa is about five years old and ever since she was born, my viewpoint has changed. She has been and will always be the most important person in my life. Whatever decisions I make, Nysa is always at the back of my mind. Because I spend very less time with her. I am lenient with her, and Kajol is stricter. Nysa is a lot like me, she is happiest when she has the whole family around her. I can’t describe how I felt when I held Nysa in my arms for the first time — to say I was overwhelmed with love and caring for this tiny being would be an understatement; every father has to feel it to understand it. Trying to explain the feeling robs it of its value.
